Location
The Shaktishifa Clinic is located in the urban area of Hyderabad, India,
the fifth largest city with a population of ~ 3 million. Use of the land
and original (unimproved) buildings is provided on a no-cost basis on property
belonging to a member of the Board of Directors.
The clinic buildings, the land upon which they are founded,
and the
surrounding property belong to a member of the Board of Directors of the
Shaktishifa Foundation. Permission to operate a charitable healthcare
organization has been legally awarded to the SSF. However, the SSF does
not have property rights to the physical assets of the land or structures
thereon.
The renovation of the original buildings (a chicken coop
and a two-room cabin!) was financed by Dr. Nasreen Hussain with a personal
loan backed by a second mortgage on her U.S. residence. None of the charitable
funds acquired by either the U.S.-based IHF or the India-based SSF have
been used to enhance the permanent physical assets of board members (such
as the buildings and surrounding property).
The work of the Shaktishifa Foundation is to ultimately
enable organizational development. Any physical assets acquired by IHF
or SSF maybe moved as necessary to perform the foundations' missions.
Facilities
The clinic complex consists of two buildings that face each other across
a garden courtyard.
The first building (see building 1) is long 24 ft.
room with an attached bath that functions as the Foundations office and
Ophthalmology Suite. It is equipped with a basic office set-up and includes
a computer, printer & copier, telephone & internet access. The
shared space includes all the necessary equipment for a basic eye-exam
including a Carl Zeiss slit-lamp with applenation tonometer. Waiting area
on attached front patio.
The main clinic complex (see building 2). It has
4 rooms fully outfitted with basic clinic equipment. Rooms measure 7'x
11' and are arranged in pairs alongside a central corridor providing entry
and exit to the clinic. Attached are a washroom as well as a lab. The
lab will be furnished with the necessary equipment in early 2004. Attached
waiting areas on patios at front and back.
Additional waiting space in open courtyard and surrounding
gardens.
Two additional lavatories provided close behind Building
#2.
Special efforts have been made to make the area cheerful
and non-intimidating so that our patients feel comfortable and welcome.
Volunteer artists and students have painted murals on the walls. One of
these depicts the "Whitney Arch" - a symbol of Shattuck-St.
Mary's School - as an expression of gratitude for their generosity. A
small landscaped garden augments the surrounding natural beauty and provides
our young patients a place to play while they wait (weather permitting!).
The clinic and surrounding area are well lighted to provide
safety at night.
