BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FOUNDATION

Dr. Nasreen Hussain was awarded the Leonard P. Burke, M.D. Memorial in June, 1993 by the Department of Family Practice & Community Health at the University of Minnesota for her unique service contribution while at the University of MN Research Department to identify preventable causes of developmental delays in children. She used the accompanying $750 cash award, funded by the Minnesota Medical Foundation, as seed money to start a charitable health clinic in Hyderabad, India. This clinic was operated by friends and volunteers on an as-available basis in her absence.

The renovation of the second of two Shaktishifa Clinic buildings, originally an old chicken coop and two-room cabin, was completed in the summer of 2003. The Shaktishifa clinic is now open and caring for those in need.
